New book/fanfic adaptation idea

Ok, ok, I'm a glutton for punishment. I still have to work on the detective book, and that one's next, but I was thinking about another fanfic. This is one with an original character (not the first one I did, though) and I thought about taking elements of that story, without the Smallville stuff and creating an original story around it.

So, the gist of the story I want to use centres around a character (who happens to be an SV character) returning supposedly from the dead, completely changed. He is also married. His wife seems to be someone so unlikely that other characters are surprised, not knowing that he is using her. She eventually learns of his deceit and leaves him, only to fall for the man who becomes her protector. The relationship is ultimately doomed.

My idea borrows much from this concept. The main character is someone who has found herself in an abusive marriage. While it's not physical, it is emotional abuse. She meets someone who befriends her, having been an acquaintance of her husband's, and slowly begins to make her realise the truth about her marriage. She eventually leaves her husband and goes to stay with the other man and he helps her start to believe in herself. Eventually the two embark on a passionate affair.

My thought is this. In the fanfic, the OC and the other character don't end up together and she becomes friends with her ex-husband. I don't want that for this story. Emotional abusers never really change even when they become aware of what they're doing. I also don't want her staying with the other man, which goes against the romance genre. The thing is, I don't really want this to be a romance either. Unless it's a story about self-love. It's not so much a coming-of-age either, more of a finding your own identity.

Again, this will mean that the fanfic will be withdrawn from circulation. But yes, I would like opinions from those who have read the fic. You will know which one I mean. Would you read a story like this, where the two protagonists actually don't end up together?

On another note, remember the Chloe/Lex story Convenience? I'm still debating whether to adapt that into a Regency type story, but I don't know. I haven't read enough of the genre to get the details right and I do think it could work as a contemporary novel. Unfortunately it will be more of a Harlequin type novel, as reluctant as I am to write something in that formula. At least they sell.

I think it would be a great book. I don't think you'd market it as romance. It sounds more like Women's Literature which is a different genre. The point there is the woman's journey from where she starts to somewhere stronger and independent. The idea sounds like a good fit for that to me.

Good luck with it if you decide to go with it!

Thanks Mary. I'd always intended to do something with the original character I created for the fanfic as I liked the concept. I just wanted to avoid making it a romance.
