Progress update

On Saturday it will be four weeks since I went and saw the plastic surgeon and got told I need to lose some weight before he'll consider me for the surgery.

I've been pretty good. Okay, the first week I wasn't so good. I ate a bit of chocolate and a bit of junk food, but the last three weeks I've stopped all that. I get the impression with my Mum that it's a bit of a nuisance that I'm no longer allowing myself sugary treats or things like potato chips but when it's something you want as badly as I want the surgery then she is just going to have to deal with it.

Tomorrow, being Christmas, will be hard because Mum got a lamb for dinner (which I'll have to have at lunch because I'll be working from 4.30pm to 8.30pm) and I made sure she got some baby potatoes which we can boil in their jackets.

I found a fitness app which I use to keep an eye on my calorie count and so far I'm doing pretty well with that. I'm trying to keep it to 1200 calories or less and have done all right with that. Sometimes it's been a bit low but all good.

It amazes me though how much sugar is in things. I do still have one coffee a day (and try to drink water the rest of the day) but even without that, the sugar is way over the limit. There's so much sugar in everything. Most of it is fructose, as I've been eating a lot of bananas and apples and I sometimes have a smoothie for breakfast, but I'm paying attention a lot more to the nutritional facts in products. Like today I was looking at a can of tomatoes. It's amazing how much sodium is in that. Looks like I'll be getting fresh tomatoes and making puree out of those. I also looked at soup and the amount of sugar and sodium in that is phenomenal.

Exercise? Not so good. I've been meaning to go up to the pools and see about getting in some swimming. I'm not a confident swimmer so I would prefer swimming when it's not busy so I can stay close to the side of the pool or swim in the part where it's not so deep. Other than that, I'm either doing a bit of walking or getting out on the bike or weight training.

Having said that, I'm well on target for losing 15kgs within six months. I've lost nearly 4kgs so I would say it'll take a little less time than that. I still want to do this sensibly and I figure after about 10kg it'll probably even out and I'll have to step up the exercise. Baby steps. After I lose the 15kgs I think I'll have another 25 to go, but the surgery will take a little bit of that too. Once the doctor gives the ok, I've been told it will take four months for the surgery so I should lose a bit more then.

I've made a plan to go see the doctor at the end of January for a wellness check, and probably a blood test, just to make sure I am doing this sensibly.

Do I miss the extra sugar and the chocolate? Honestly? Yes and no. I mean, this is a terrible time of year to be on a diet, but I've stuck to my resolve and not had any sweets (apart from fruit) for the last three weeks and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself. I mean, I'm someone who would eat chocolate every day and buy junk food every day as well, so it's a pretty big change.

I decided I will take a photo each week just to get some kind of record of my progress and I take my measurements once a week. I've been a bit obsessive about getting on the scales and I'm trying not to do that. Anyway, while I can't see a lot of change yet, apart from my tummy losing a little bit of flab, the photos should help. Do you guys want to see the pics?

I'd love it if someone could put together a kind of photo chart for me after a couple of months so I can see the progression. Anyone good with photoshop? I don't have it on my computer. I know one person who is really good with it but she might be busy so I don't feel I can ask.

Anyway, that's me. I've done enough babbling. It's one day to Christmas so last word, I promise ...

Yay for you! *cheers you on* That's wonderful progress and go you on the no sweets and no junk food thing! I've not done well at that at all over the last month or so. I've managed to stay steady on the weight but only barely.

I kind of like the idea of doing occasional updates on LJ as well so you guys can tell me off if I slip. I probably sound a bit obsessive with the calorie counting but I'm determined to let go of the old habits. Believe me, I used to eat a lot of sweets, but I'm so focused on getting this surgery I'm prepared to do whatever it takes. I've had a lot of temptation but I'm so glad I've avoided it. :)

Massive congrats on your weight loss journey so far! It's incredibly difficult to do alone, so if you need a buddy to keep you in check, I'm happy to be your girl. You can do this, babes. :-)

It is hard to do alone, but I've got my mind on the goal, which is to lose enough to get the surgery. Look out for my PM in a mo.
