Family stuff

I don't want to start off by complaining about work but this week I've been pretty much run off my feet. There has barely been a day where I've been able to leave at a reasonable time. I've been late home every day this week and it's been exhausting.

Anyway, enough about that. My mum is going for surgery next month.

Just a little background. Nearly six years ago, my mother was in a serious accident. She was a passenger in a bus which was hit by a car. The driver of the car had failed to give way and hit the bus, bout two inches from where my mum was sitting. To cut a long story short, she fractured her pelvis in three places and has had nothing but problems ever since.

A couple of weeks ago, she had a bad fall. She's been getting dizzy spells and has had quite a few falls in the last two or three years. She had to go see her doctor as he is treating her for a bad hip. She needs a hip replacement, but the public health system being what it is, she's not likely to get it any time soon.

Anyway, the doctor hit the roof when he saw the bad bruising on her hip, which resulted from her fall. He's now got her on a monitor for about 48 hours to see if they can figure out what is going on. She's also been complaining of chest pains, although she says they're not serious but the doctor's worried about that as well.

The surgery she's going to have is quite serious. About three or four years ago, doctors discovered she had a vein growing across her oesophagus and it was causing a blockage. She was basically choking on anything and everything. They did a ventricular bypass and grafted a new vein. This was a procedure which had never been done in NZ before.

Well, they found out the graft is not doing what it's supposed to do and she's still choking. She also has a very painful lump in her neck from the graft. So they have to open her up again and fix it.

Anyway, this is one reason why I've been trying to get a job in the city where she lives. I don't want to be up here in case something happens. My mother is turning 68 this year and she is not in the best of health. She lost her older sister last year because her sister got an aortic aneurysm. They weren't exactly the best of friends, or friends at all, really, but still, it hit the family pretty hard.

Yes, I am worried about her. I've already lost one parent, even though it's been almost sixteen years. I really don't want to lose another one just yet. Besides, as soon as she has her hip replacement, we're planning on going to England (although it has to be at the same time as the Chelsea Flower Show). I've been wanting to visit England for years and so has Mum, so I want this to be something we can do together.
