The Kiwi Accent

I was browsing Smallville Wiki the other day and I was reading Desaad's bio. Apparently he 'speaks with a New Zealand accent'. Uhmmmm, what?

I don't know how many times I've watched the episodes he's in but that is no NZ accent.

I know, I know, take anything on Wiki with a grain of salt. Anyhoo, it did make me think about how we Kiwis talk so differently. I remember when I was on my trip, even my friends couldn't always make out what I was saying. I didn't think my accent was that bad, but I guess they just weren't used to it.

I came across this the other day which might help explain some of our weird ways:

Kiwi Slang

Anyway, one of my favourite comedians is Billy T James. The following vid is from his comedy show back in the 80s. He takes the mickey out of a lot of things, and not just NZ, although some of it is pretty exaggerated. He was an awesome singer too, by the way. He died in 1991.

Your accent is never 'bad', it is good and to be celebrated.

Certain nations are too insular and not used to dealing with the variety of Englishes around the world. In fact, to some, I don't think the rest of the world exists!

In many ways, we're not all as far apart as used to be, thanks to many of these sites, but yeah, accents and language can still separate us.

HA! That's pretty cool! Thanks for posting that. I love reading about other folks' slang. I especially liked #2 because I got in the habit of greeting people with Hola! (way back in high school, and then only because a few of us did it ironically) and I've continued that greeting to this day. Now I've got people at work doing it. Mission accomplished. We're all slightly more bilingual than we started.

I think I might start using wop wops. Here in West Texas you need more than one way to describe the boonies. This will go nicely with "bufu" and "east Jesus."

I sent the link to a couple of friends and we all got a good giggle out of #17. Wopwops is a pretty common one in my neck of the woods.

Glad you got a giggle out of it.

Steve Byers, who plays Desaad, is very much Canadian so I'd be surprised if he had a NZ accent!

Yep, I read that. Just goes to show you need to be really careful what you believe on the likes of Wiki. Even for a fandom.
