I'm going to get on my soapbox for a minute

A while ago I was reading an op-ed about smoking vs drinking.

The writer made a point that smokers don't get behind the wheel and put other motorists in danger when they've had a cigarette.

Fair enough point, I suppose, but here's mine.

I don't know about the statistics but smoking kills people too. Maybe it's not as instantaneous as a car crash, but still, there's lung cancer, respiratory disease and a whole host of other diseases.

I don't smoke and I never have, but I grew up in a household where my parents both smoked. My dad quit when I was in my teens and my mother quit a few years later.

Maybe it's totally unrelated to the smoking, but my father ended up with cancer. Kidney cancer, but cancer just the same, and it killed him.

My mother is a bad asthmatic and has COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and according to this citation in Wikipedia COPD is caused by noxious particles or gas, most commonly from tobacco smoking, which triggers an abnormal inflammatory response in the lung. How do you think it makes me feel to watch my mother suffer through this disease when she may not have got it in the first place if she hadn't started smoking when she was in her teens?

I get it. Back in those days, it was cool, and it was supposed to be sophisticated. But it's killing people!

I hate smoking, and I mean hate it. These days, if I'm walking down the street and someone is smoking around me, I can't breathe. My lungs start to close up and I choke. Maybe it's their right to smoke, since it's not illegal, but it's my right to breathe, damn it! I mean, what, I shouldn't walk anywhere in case I run into a smoker? Why should I limit my activities? And yes, I have the same problem with smoky exhausts, but it's not as direct as someone blowing smoke my way.

The very smell of it makes me sick to my stomach and I cannot stand to see cigarette butts on the street.

I'm not saying alcohol is any better, but there are equal negatives about these two things. I can't stand the smell of alcohol either and I don't drink much, if at all.

Why am I saying this now? Well, I walked into a shop where the owner was smoking out the back. Sure, he was outside, but the smoke was drifting inside, making it very unpleasant for me.

Anyway, that's my preachy moment for the day.

It's banned inside buildings, but not outside, so people can still smoke outside cafes etc.
