Rugby World Cup

I was given tickets to see the Bronze Final of the Rugby World Cup at Eden Park and I kept going back and forth wondering if I should go or not. The thing is, I don't get rugby. I don't follow the game although I know enough to know what a try and a conversion is. But it's not my cup of tea.
Having said that, I figured, well, since they gave us the tickets I might as well go see what it's all about. And it's a lot different actually being there because you're in the atmosphere and you're close to the excitement. And, as it turns out, a friend of mine got given the seats right next to mine so I at least had someone there that I knew.

So Australia and Wales were playing for the bronze medal. Kat and I booed when the Aussies had the ball and hollered 'Wales' when it was their turn. Don't ask me why I supported Wales when our closest neighbours are the Aussies and my great-grandfather was actually Australian by birth (Geelong, Victoria). Then again, I do also have a vague connection to Wales - there's Welsh ancestry somewhere in the family.

The first half wasdn't very interesting, to be honest. While the seats were great, most of the action took place on the other side of the stadium so what we saw was mostly on the big screen. But at one point we were all doing a Mexican Wave, which was pretty funny.
Australia scored the first try, then kicked a conversion. Wales got a penalty goal. Then Wales got a try and Kat and I were practically screaming our heads off. But it was Aussie who came out ahead. At the end of the day they were the better team.

I'm not sure who's playing for the silver tomorrow night (Saturday), but the final for the cup is on Sunday and it's the All Blacks (Kiwis) vs France. Who am I backing? Well, duh. And I'm still debating whether to watch it on tv. I'm hoping it will be an exciting game. If our boys win it will be the first time since 1987.

Anyway, just thought I'd share a couple of pics.

It is much better when you are there particularly if a friend is there too. Wales needed all the support they could get.

I played rugby at school and loathed it, if I'd known then that I would have a slave who was rugby player I may have looked on it differently.

Reading about you and your friend screaming reminds me about girls' schools hockey matches. Can you imagine 10,000 teenage girls screaming together?!!!!!!

Oh gawd, I really don't want to think about 10,000 girls screaming together. Kat and I weren't the only ones screaming though. I'm not sure I could sit through another match, in all honesty, since I really don't understand the game. But we kiwis have a lot riding on the final game, so I'll see.
