News From Down Under

I just had a thought that there might have been something on news reports. Although I'm not sure just how much importance you guys place on news from down under.

The city of Christchurch was hit by an earthquake at 4.35am New Zealand time (approximately half past noon Friday in New York).

The quake measured 7.1 on the Richter Scale. It was 10km deep and situated west of Christchurch City (a central city in the South Island).

There have been reports of extensive damage, but only two people have been seriously injured. There are no reports of any deaths so far.

The quake wasn't felt in Auckland (where I live) but I've heard that some in the central part of the North Island did feel it. I also have a great-uncle in the city who is elderly and I'm not sure how he is as we can't contact him. The power is down in the city and surrounding rural areas and there is some damage to the infrastructure.

Anyway, just thought you might be interested to know. If you're interested in more I can update you as I hear more.

I just got a call from my Mum. My uncle's okay - he has power and water so he's fine.

My uncle's okay. He had power where he was and my Mum managed to ring him, even though she really wasn't supposed to.

Power's slowly being restored. It's actually lucky that it happened at 4.30 in the morning rather than a few hours later. Imagine the chaos. Shudder!

It's all good. I feel sorry for the people in Christchurch. There were some who lost their homes yesterday due to some bad structural damage. Some of our historical homes were pretty badly damaged too.
The weather's actually supposed to worsen which is going to make clean up pretty hard, but it should be okay.
I used to live in a city in the central North Island where we used to have earthquakes a lot, but never anything as big as yesterday's.

Yeah, I'm better than a lot of people in Christchurch. The damage was pretty bad, but at least no one died. A few had some lucky escapes though.
