Writing this month so far

I haven't touched any of my fanfic WIPs so far.

I've been focusing on the one story, which is the profic adaptation of a fanfic and I've written about 24,000 words so far. I've changed quite a bit in the story, although I'm keeping the father-daughter dynamic and the fact that the main female character is a reporter. It's an environment I'm very familiar with and in terms of the plot, according to the romance genre, it fits well.

Basically, in the original fanfic Lex had been married to a girl he met in school and she was killed when the tornado struck Smallville. She was pregnant with their daughter. Devastated, Lex decided to leave Smallville, taking his daughter with him. In the story, Lionel was also killed during the tornado. Years later, Lex returns to Metropolis. His daughter is now a beautiful young girl and Chloe works at the Daily Planet. She's assigned the story on his return. She also broke up with Oliver and is the mother of a two year old.

I'm fleshing out quite a bit as there were a few things I sort of glossed over in the fanfic and a few details that didn't get into the fanfic. The characters still knew each other in the past, although they don't live in a small town, just a suburb of a big city. The wife is killed in a car accident.

I'm debating whether to remove the fanfic from circulation. While the general plot points remain similar to the fanfic, the characters aren't the same and certain situations aren't the same. This is just going to be a sweet romance with a few obstacles: ie: he blames himself for his wife's death, whereas the female reporter thinks the reason her marriage broke up is because of her being too focused on her work.

Put it this way, I don't want this to be a comparison to a certain book series. I was once asked if it was fair to the Smallville characters if I turned a fanfic into a profic, but my point is, the plot itself is still original. Boy meets girl, boy has obstacles to falling in love with girl, girl has similar obstacles - how do they get over this. That plot doesn't include anything like the superhero verse. Some parts of the story are similar, just written differently.

I don't know. If anyone has any opinion on this, let me know what you think.

I honestly don't think you have a problem. You've changed things enough from what you've said. Though someone, somewhere, may ask anyway because people just can't seem to conceive of a writer being able to write both fanfic and original fic.

Either way, glad to hear you've been making progress! :D

Well, you know my feelings on fanfic critics. But yeah, the point is, the story itself, without the Smallville related detail, is original and that's my focus for it.

You know, as I was reading the premise of the story, my first thought was that this would do well as an original fic. From what I can see, there's no real reason for the Sv-verse to be the focus. Unless you plan on reintroducing the meteor freaks that emerged after the shower, this could have happened anywhere in the world.

I say pull it and make it an original story. Heck, it already is. You can maintain the SV characters as they are such a strong source of inspiration; once you're done writing, simply change the names and see what happens.

That's my opinion. Let me know what you decide! :-)

Yeah, I'm staying away from anything SV related and just sticking to the actual romance part of the story. As for the characters, there are some similar characteristics but that's pretty much it. Thanks for the input Dee.
