Checking in

Only about 1,000 words written tonight, but it's cold and my bedroom is like an icebox, so it kind of puts a dampener on things.

Having said that, I'm having fun with this. I'm still on the first chapter and I've got a scene where Amanda goes to see her dad at the police station and meets Jim for the first time. Her dad invites her for a drink (the drinking age is 18 here and Amanda's 19) and immediately she and Jim clash. It's like ... well, remember the early days of Clois in Smallville where they continually try to one-up each other and pretend like they hate each other? Yeah, like that.

Okay, so Amanda's already taken one look at Jim and done a Monica from friends ... as in "Hummina, hummina, hummina." Ah well, I'm sure you get the idea. I describe him, from her p.o.v at least, as "like a cross between Aragorn of the Lord of the Rings movies and George Clooney."

Jim has some Scandinavian blood in him, so that's where he gets his looks from. Amanda, by the way, will have some Slavic ancestry (or rather Dalmatian). I'm setting the story in a fictional area of a big city, but it's modelled on a place I know well, as I worked as a reporter there, and it's an area where a lot of people from the Dalmatia region emigrated to. Okay, just a useless bit of history, but it adds colour, I think.

Anyway, Jim and Amanda absolutely cannot stand each other, at first. And Amanda is the total opposite of me. She's sexy, beautiful and way too over-confident about her looks and her brains. Which is why later in the book it'll get her into a whole heapin' helpin' of trouble.

On the job front, no news there. The recruitment agencies I've contacted haven't contacted me back. I know it's a slow time of year, being winter. Usually people pick summer, or a new year for moving on to a new job, so I'm not surprised. Anyway, I'm taking a few days off (since I haven't actually had a full week off since I started my sub-editing job in May last year) and will work on it.
