Man of Steel - the verdict

Okay, so I know you guys in the US have already had it in theatres for two weeks but we're a little country on the bottom of the world, so we don't get it released at the same time.

Anyway, I think I timed it fairly well, going to the 6pm session on a Friday (after work, when everyone else is out drinking, lol) as there weren't too many people there.

So, the verdict. Well, I had a few WTF moments. Like Lois knows his true identity?

A friend just couldn't picture Kevin Costner as Jonathan and I'm with him. I still see Schneider in that role. Not that Kevin didn't do a good job. It was just hard to see him in the role.

I personally do not like Russell Crowe. I know he's a Kiwi by birth and he has cousins who are famous cricketers here, but I still do not like him. Having said that, I think he did a good job as Jor-El. Less pompous and not as cold as Terence Stamp's version.

I'm still iffy about Amy. Not that she's a bad actress, and I do like her personally. It's just I've seen her in more fluffy roles and I just don't buy her as tough as nails Lois Lane.

Best lines in the movie: The one where the general looks at the lieutenant and asks her what's wrong.

"Nothing sir, it's just ... he's kinda hot."

I might be misquoting, but I don't care.

Lastly, Kal kills Zod??????? I know he was pretty reluctant and he screamed in anguish, but still ... that's not the Kal we know and love.

So, it didn't totally suck but I don't think it was worth the two year build-up. What I will say is, it's great to see what a film budget can do as opposed to a tv budget. Not that the FX were bad in Smallville, just not as good as they could have been with a bigger budget.

Great minds think alike, i went to the 3.15 showing after work hoping to avoid the school holiday crush - except there wasn't one. I asked at the counter and they said that opening night was pretty quiet. Maybe the aussies have decided to boycott? I mostly agree with your comments - the movie was meh for me overall with some bits I really liked, some haven't i seen that in Matrix, Avatar and now I am looking at a video game here moments and of course the WT.

The inclusion of Lois in this story was just not my thing - partially an Amy Adams thing and partially the way they wrote her character IMO. The fake science mumbo left me with more answers than I got and I agree with the Kal killing Zod thing (especially Clark in SV was such a righteous dude about the thought shalt not kill).

Have to agree with the captain though - he is kinda hot (but I don't know if he's hot enough to get me to the cinema a second time).

Cheers

I guess I've kind of been spoiled by Smallville, because I still prefer Tom. *g* Henry's got the physique, but the face just doesn't do it for me.

That was totally true!
"Nothing sir, it's just ... he's kinda hot."

It made me really LOL!

I agree with you! I was in total shock when he killed Zod.. like what happened to my innocent Clarkie who never killed people?

Absolutely the best line. As for the not killing, it's not to say that Clark in SV didn't, but not on purpose. The fact that this was a conscious choice actually killed me.

I am actually looking forward to seeing the movie... but then I have been a fan of all things Superman (more movies and television shows, never read a lot of the comics).

And, randomly, SV "Pilot" episode was on tonight and I watched it and it made me think that Clark not killing anyone was not for lack of trying. In that very first episode he tossed Jeremy (the 'scarecrow') across an alley; he flew over a car/pick-up truck and into a wall. If it weren't a tv show, that would have killed any normal human being, if not permanently maimed him. My memory's not good enough to remember exact episodes, but I'm fairly sure Jeremy wasn't the last person to get violently tossed aside by Clark.

That aside, I am certain, watching Kal kill Zod probably won't be my favorite part of the movie.

Thank you, Leanne, for sharing your review; it will certainly make me pay attention to a lot of different things than I had
anticipated. ☺

In the beginning of Smallville, I think Clark just was too young to really consider the consequences of his actions. As for that moment in the movie, I understand why but it's still hard to take.

I went to see it yesterday. I was pleased there was so much Smallville in it, the flashbacks showed his growing problems nicely. I agree with you about the Kents, but thought the two did ok, Jonathan's sacrifice was heartbreaking.

I loved the floating machine servant/computers and the sweet dragonfly/personal transport for Jor. I mind neither Amy nor the fact that Lois knows. Did you spot the actor with the burnt arm from SV s1 ep3 I think, in the control room?

I thought Henry Cavill was good, not as gorgeous as Tom in three-quarter view, but I wouldn't mind being rescued by him.

There was too much mass destruction for me, I assume he killed Zod to save the rather gormless humans, who cowered well but should really have run.

I'm also fed up with all the deep bass music and all the bloody drummers. I'm not a fan of Zimmer and think he's stuck in a rut but a friend disagrees!

The SV farmhouse was really too nice but I'm afraid it's spoilt me for all others.

That comment by the 'Captain" was hilarious, also Supes not liking to be spied on.

I hope there's a sequel with the same cast (even Zimmer's music), I thought they worked through the problems that Christopher Reeve's films ignored.

You're right about the mass destruction. Someone else mentioned there were scenes reminiscent of Independence Day and other movies and I have to admit I was thinking that at the same time.

Hmm, I spotted Alessandro (Emil) and McKenzie (Lex clone) but I didn't see the actor from season 1.

I guess Smallville just spoilt me for all others, *g*
