Chapter Nine

Chloe sighed. She shifted her wrist, cuffed to the side of the table. There was just enough give in the chain for her to use both hands, but not enough in the cuff for her to be able to pull free. Not that she could get anywhere. Her ankle was also chained.

She looked at the plate in front of her. It looked like, well, she didn’t want to think about what it looked like. But according to the orderly, or whatever he was, that had put it in front of her, it was a high protein-based meal similar to that served to prisoners. Chloe would give her right hand for some real food.

She pushed the plate away in disgust, leaning her elbow on the table. The guard, orderly, whatever, was standing beside the door. She was guarded all the time now. Never allowed any privacy. She supposed the reason was her escape attempt. Lex had ordered the next time she would be shot.

Chloe tried to be reasonable. Maybe the research Lex was doing could eventually have good applications. But she doubted his motives. This was Lex she was talking about. The monster who had investigated her best friend, all while pretending to be his best friend. Okay, so maybe that wasn’t a good example, she thought. After all, she had also investigated Clark when she found out his adoption wasn’t real.

Lex had faked Lana’s pregnancy to force her to marry him. So, maybe it was the twenty-first century and just because a girl was pregnant didn’t mean the couple absolutely had to get married. But really, Lex had professed to love Lana, yet continued to manipulate her.

Chloe knew what she was doing. She was trying to justify her resistance to him. To all his tests. Plus, he’d made her suffer through the doctor taking tissue samples of her organs. All while she was awake. He was putting her through exactly the kind of thing that Clark always told her he’d feared. Like it was some sort of vivisection. Yeah, that’s what it was, she thought.

She was so deep in her thoughts that she hadn’t heard the door open. But she did hear the scrape of another chair on the concrete floor and looked up to see Lex smirking at her.

“I hear from my staff that you’re not eating,” he said.

“You really expect me to eat something that looks as if it’s been puked up?”

“I happen to know it is highly nutritious,” he said. “And you need your protein. You’ve barely eaten in three days.”

“That’s because you’ve kept me strapped down like some mental patient.”

Lex smirked unapologetically. “Now be fair, Chloe. You did try to escape. If you had been a little more co-operative, then I might have been a little more lenient.”

“Co-operative? You kidnap me from my apartment, drug me, do these horrible tests on me, cut me up like I’m some animal to be dissected and you want me to co-operate?”

“Those tests are necessary. As are the tissue samples.”

“And you stood and watched like it was some freak show. You are unbelievable Lex. You’re a monster.”

Lex frowned, then made a face as if he was pouting.

“Now, that hurts, Chloe. I’m not a monster. I’m not the one with an ‘inhuman’ ability, am I?”

Chloe swallowed visibly. What was he trying to say, that she was a monster because of what she could do? She had to admit, there were others out there – meteor freaks – who had become mentally unstable. A danger to themselves and others because of those abilities. And that had been her greatest fear since discovering her own power. That eventually it would drive her into psychosis.

She had no idea how long she’d had the power. It had only been discovered last year, after all. She’d been around more meteor rocks than anybody. Well, except for Lex, of course, who made it his mission in life to study their effects, and Clark, who was allergic and would just as soon get as far away from them as he could.

Lex pushed the plate back toward her. “Now eat. Before I have you force fed.”

Chloe glanced at him. His face was impassive, but she had no doubt that he meant what he said.

Sighing, she picked up the spoon and dipped it in the bowl, spooning the goop into her mouth. It tasted as disgusting as it looked, but she forced herself to eat it, trying not to show Lex how grossed out she was. She was so going to make him pay for this when she got out of here. She promised herself that.

Satisfied, Lex sat there and watched her eat every mouthful. Then he got up and went to the door.

“If you need anything,” he said with another smirk. “Don’t even ask.”

“You can let me the fuck out of here, Lex,” she said.

He shook his head. “Nice try.”

Chloe sat back, sighing impatiently. She wondered what else Lex had in store for her. She went back to staring at the walls of this little room. Unlike her cell, where the walls were painted a dark grey, this one had light grey walls. She didn’t know if that was supposed to do anything to lighten the mood, but it did lighten the room considerably. And she was still pissed.

She didn’t have to wait long to find out what was next. Half an hour after she’d eaten, with the stuff still settling uneasily in her stomach, Chloe was dragged out of the room and taken to another room. This time it wasn’t the lab/theatre she had been in before. It was another lab.

“We want to know the extent of your ability,” the scientist told her.

He explained they were going to test that ability by making her heal wounds, of ranging severity. If she refused to co-operate, she wouldn’t get any food until she did. Chloe began to feel like a dog undergoing training. Roll over, you’ll get some treats. Sit girl, you’ll get a treat. She growled in frustration and anger at the thought that they weren’t treating her like a human being. More like a lab rat or a guinea pig. She was never taking Clark’s fears for granted again, she thought.
